Personal Project & Chill Vibes Sunday ☀️

Mindful Flow Series: Yoga for Anxiety

We’re all prone to anxiety—it’s a normal and protective emotion. But when it overtakes us, we live in our [often untrue] thoughts, the body becomes dysregulated, and we get disconnected from life.

Blending ancient wisdom with modern therapy practices, this workshop is designed to help you cope with stress and anxiety. Drawing from Ayurveda, we’ll move through breathwork, yoga postures, and mindfulness practices. Any level of yoga experience is welcome.

What to expect:
🪷 Grounding Yoga Pranayama (breathwork) & Asana (postures) – to regulate the nervous system and reduce restless energy
🌀 Meditation for the Overthinking Mind –to quiet racing thoughts, while learning cognitive defusion, a technique to not get lost in our mind’s narratives.
❇️ Mindfulness of Sound & Sound Bath – immersing in healing vibrations to release tension, practice sound as an anchor, and invite deep relaxation.

Wear comfortable clothes and arrive a few minutes early to set up. Yoga mats are available, but feel free to bring your own. Optional: a journal and pen.

This workshop is part of the Mindful Flow Series, a collection of workshops weaving together Eastern healing traditions and Western psychotherapy to increase resilience and cultivate ease. In each workshop, you’ll also walk away with a few ideas and mind-body tools to bring into daily life to nurture your well-being. Facilitated by Nira, Licensed Psychotherapist & Yoga/Meditation instructor

What Should We Solve, Together? A Civic Gathering at Groundfloor on What Matters Most

A Civic Gathering at Groundfloor on What Matters Most

Oakland is full of wisdom — and people ready to act. What’s missing is a space to listen deeply, identify the problems that matter most, and collaborate across lines to solve them.

This gathering is the first step in a broader community-led civic process. Together, we’ll:
• Share what really matters to you, as an Oaklander
• Explore what’s possible across neighborhoods, backgrounds, and sectors
• Experience and experiment with inclusive practices and tools
(like this interactive Pol.is survey > https://bit.ly/OaklandCivicSolutions2025)
• Discover opportunities to meet with community members, leaders, media, and policymakers.

Facilitated by a local team of community organizers and civic innovators, we invite you to come and be heard. This is not a listening session— come ready to build something together.

Whether you’re a resident, activist, small biz owner, journalist, policymaker, or just someone who cares — your voice belongs here.

We aim to create a welcoming and transformative space where people feel heard, discover shared priorities, and want to build toward solutions together. Join us at the beginning — your voice shapes this ongoing experiment in real democracy for the East Bay.

==
Event hosted by Real Democracy & East Bay Civic Hub. Let’s find out what matters, and build from the ground floor.

Event is free and open to all local attendees. You don’t do not need to be a member of Groundfloor to attend, and welcome you as a guest.

Book Launch for Mona Shomali’s Water Mamas

Join us to celebrate the launch of Groundfloor member Mona Shomali’s new book WATER MAMAS!

This event is free and open to the public.

The Amazon is dying. What price is too high to save it?

In a not-so-distant future, the Earth's lungs are failing. A United Nations representative, Afa, finds herself deep in the parched heart of the Amazon, facing the ultimate ethical dilemma. Her mission: secure consent from indigenous tribes to start a rain seeding program. Rain cloud technology promises to reverse the ravages of climate change, to breathe life back into the global rainforests.

But here, in the ancient heart of their lands, consent is not merely a formality; it's enshrined in human rights law. Her initial confidence crumbles in Guyana, where the very idea of man-made rain strikes at the core of Indigenous mythology and spirituality. It’s a clash of worlds—Western science versus ancestral wisdom—with the fate of the global climate hanging precariously in the balance.

Amidst this complex crisis, Afa's journey becomes intensely personal. Navigating the pressures of her career and the complexities of an unexpected romance, she is forced to confront what she truly believes is right for her own life.

This is more than a story of technology versus tradition. It’s a gripping exploration of climate crisis, social justice, and the profound power of belief. Follow Mona Shomali as she masterfully weaves together her expertise in Indigenous Human Rights and Environmental Science, challenging us to consider what it means to make the "right" decision when the world is teetering on the edge.

Author bio: Mona Shomali is an Iranian American author and artist driven by a singular purpose: to explore how we navigate competing morals and worldviews. Her unique background, steeped in Indigenous Human Rights and Environmental Science, informs her brush and her prose.

Mona's journey, into the heart of the Amazon, started with her pivotal research work on the Sarayacu vs. Ecuador case in the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. She worked on behalf of the Sarayacu tribe who was suing the state of Ecuador for illegally allowing drilling on their ancestral land without consent. Having lived and worked with tribes in Guyana and Brazil, Mona has dedicated her career to teaching and sharing the crucial juxtapositions and cultural challenges inherent in Western environmentalism.

As an adjunct faculty member at The New School, Pace, and NYU, her courses were focused on Indigenous human rights, resource conflicts in the Amazon, International environmental governance, and environmental justice. She also taught ecology at the New York Botanical Garden.

Now based in Oakland, California, Mona's figurative paintings, like those in her "Invisible Stains" collection (including Water Mamas's cover art), embody her commitment to these vital global conversations.

Book Club: Demon Copperhead

September's book club discussion will be Demon Copperhead.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Barbara Kingsolver's book is a brilliant novel that enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young hero’s unforgettable journey to maturity.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.

Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.

*********

As usual, come prepared to talk about the book. Ideally, it would be good to finish it, but we won't kick you out if you just want to come and hang with us and talk about topics from the book, like:

- Systemic poverty and class barriers

About Tool Time:

GroundFloor’s skill-share series is all about making sense of the constant wave of new digital tools - whether for creative projects, professional growth, or just staying current. From AI-powered assistants and no-code builders to podcasting tools and creative design apps, Tool Time explores the fast-moving world of digital tools through the lens of real-world use. We’ll focus on what’s useful, what’s emerging, and how GroundFloor members are putting these tools to work in creative, personal, and professional ways.

Each session highlights one or more tools or workflows, lots of opportunity to demo and discuss. Got a tool you’d like to showcase—or one you want us to explore next? Let us know.

Open to all GroundFloor members.

Irregular but ongoing. Stay tuned for upcoming dates.

✨Community Lunch✨

Craft Club!

If you knit, crochet, sew or do any other crafts come and join us! A night to hang out and relax. Whether you have a project to work on, or you want to learn a new skill!

Queer Qlub

It’s time to create a space for the queer community in Marin and this is it!

Whether you’re looking to make new friends, find a supportive community, or just have a great time, this is the place to be. We’re all about celebrating our stories, so come as you are and get ready for an evening of fun, laughter, and connection.

This space is for everyone, but most importantly those of the LGBTQIA+ community, including allies.

Every month you can bring your smiles, bodies, and a friend or two for an evening that’s all about building a community locally.

Clothing Swap!

Groundfloor LOVES a clothing swap! Summer is over and it is time to do it again! This time will continue to work with men’s, women’s, and children’s clothes! We will donate all the leftovers to the Salvation Army.

Please bring all your gently used clothes, shoes, and accessories that no longer belong with you! Whether you have summer favorites you’re ready to pass along or cozy winter pieces to trade, this event is all about sharing and discovering new-to-you styles.

Come hang with friends, find some great clothes, and give your preloved items a new home. This is a great way to clear out what you don’t need and find something you’ll love. Let’s make fashion fun and sustainable together!

Firelight Friends Triple Fun: Harvest Supper + Yoga & Porchfest add-ons!

A Sunday harvest supper in our courtyard. Let’s together create a casual yet slightly elevated gathering of friends and friends to be.

Candles and twinkle lights aplenty, vines, burbling fountain, chill vibes. Just us being us, together, naturally.

Optional: a slow pre-supper candlelit stretch and centering at the lovely new Metta yoga studio, 5:30-6:45. Zero experience needed. Just bring you (they have mats) in comfy clothes. It’s simple and nourishing.

Bring a bit of good real food of any dietariness. Simple/rustic non-competitive fare welcome. Yay for peak harvest time in Northern California! I’ll watch the rsvps/food signups with an eye to balance. Food signup here, or shout it out in the event chat: https://shorturl.at/lLr6T

This is the same day as Porchfest which ends at 5pm in Gerstle Park. I’ll be dropping food off at GF @3pm and walking to Porchfest to catch the headliners’ sets if you want to join and make it a triple Funday Sunday!

Interpersonal Club: Game Night!

This month Interpersonal Club will be hold a relaxed game night! We will explore our stash of relational games including: We’re Not Really Strangers and/or Where Should We Begin. Do you want to get deeper than the daily small talk with members but aren’t sure who’s game (heehee)? These games provide a container for deeply connecting in fun and new ways!

Interpersonal Club is a space for members to explore, inquire, practice and deepen in understanding around the many types of relationships and connections in our lives. Through the exploration of interpersonal neurobiology, communication skills, relational resonance and coherence, co-regulation, empathy, emotional attunement, attachment, collective consciousness and more, we will grow our connections in real time and deepen our capacities for authentic and embodied relationships with our friends, partners, families, children, collaborators, and communities.

*A note about our club structure: Rather than centering consumption of content or replication of hierarchical group power structures, we will tend to center group process in Interpersonal Club, meaning that we will stay with the trouble of working/playing/exploring through any sticky or murky places that may come up as we learn to be in deeper community together.

DISCLAIMER: Interpersonal Club and its events and offerings are for enrichment only and are not a substitute for therapy, counseling, or mental health support groups.

About Jackie: Jackie is an Integrative Family and Relational Coach and is a relationally focused Occupational Therapist. She enjoys translating and applying macrocosmic concepts and principles to support client's lived experiences and embodied wisdom, all while remaining grounded in context and interdependence. Jackie works with people of all ages, guided by the vast and rich fields of interpersonal neurobiology, autonomic physiology, emergent strategy, sensory integration, panpsychism, dynamic systems theory, quantum theory, anthropology, and her boundless seeking heart.
